Course Description:
The purpose of the On the Job Training class is to develop, promote, and coordinate a collaborative effort between the business community and Booker T. Washington PCS. In order to create and foster a relationship beneficial to the school and the total community, the OJT Coordinator will continue to expand and strengthen school and community partnerships, which will extend and enhance educational opportunities provided by Booker T. Washington PCS. The OJT office is seeking business partners who are willing to provide tutoring, internships, mentoring, professional expertise, career awareness, and other services.
Booker T. Washington PCS supports and encourages the development of partnerships to strengthen and enhance the quality of education and to promote community involvement with Booker T. Washington PCS.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Complete a resume
- Successfully complete a tour of duty during their internship
- Secure one letter of recommendation from their employer
- Complete a sample of student writing
- Complete a job application
Major Assignments/Projects: A Work Portfolio (resume, a letter of recommendation from supervisor, a job application, journal entries, timesheets, a 2-3 page reflection paper, a copy of a non-driver’s license, and 10 weekly activity reports).
Work Ethic: In-Class Assignments: Students will work individually or in small groups on various assigned tasks to facilitate understanding of the topic of discussion. Attendance to class and work, proper behavior on the job, and participation are factored in this process.
Notebook/Essay Portfolio: Students must journal on a weekly basis about their experiences at work.
Examinations:
Mid-Term. Presentation on a 3 - panel science board, complete with a description of internship experience, photographs, and pamphlets about the organization.
Final Exam. A PowerPoint presentation with a description of the internship experience and history of the company.
Evaluation:
- Work Ethic: work performance/attendance/attitude (50%)
- Completed Resume (10%)
- Completed Job Application (5%)
- One Letter of Recommendation/Supervisors Evaluation (10%)
- Journal Entries (10%)
- Reflection paper (15%)
Reflection Paper Requirements:
At the end of the internship, students will need to type a 2-3 page reflection paper based on their work experience. You may use the following questions as a guide: Where did you do your internship? What did you hope to learn? Describe a typical day. Describe one significant experience that stands out for your. What did you learn about working with others? What did you learn about the company/industry? What skills were required prior to interning? What skills did you learn or enhance while interning? Would you like to pursue this field of work? Why/Why not?
Failure to follow the requirements of the class will result in failure or dismissal from the internship.
